The short answer: if you're a family or a group of four or more, a private tour is usually the better choice — one price for the whole group, pickup from your door, and a day that runs at your pace. If you're travelling solo or as a couple on a tight budget, a shared coach tour will normally cost you less. Here's an honest look at the differences, from a company that runs private tours.

Private vs Coach, Side by Side
| Private tour | Shared coach tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Who's on board | Your group only — family or friends, up to 8 | Shared with other travellers |
| Pickup | From your hotel, apartment or Airbnb door | Usually a central meeting point at a set time |
| Pace | Yours — longer where you're enjoying it, shorter where you're not | A fixed timetable for the whole coach |
| Stops | Adjusted on the day, including extra photo and comfort stops | Set stops, the same for everyone |
| Price | One price for the whole group | Per seat, so each person pays |
| Children | Breaks whenever needed; free baby, child and booster seat (one of each) | Check the operator's rules on child seats and age limits |
| Vehicle | An 8-seater minibus | Usually a larger coach |
| Best for | Families, small groups, anyone who wants flexibility | Solo travellers and couples on a tight budget |
The Price Question: Do the Maths per Person
Search results usually show coach tours at a per-seat price and private tours at a group price, which makes private tours look far more expensive than they are. Our Loch Ness Day Tour is £795 for the whole group. Here's what that means per person:
2 guests
£398
each
4 guests
£199
each
6 guests
£133
each
8 guests
£100
each
To compare fairly, multiply a coach tour's per-seat price by the number of people in your group, and remember what's included on each side — door-to-door pickup, the time you'd spend getting to a meeting point, and the free car seats for children. For two people, a coach tour will almost always be cheaper. For a family of five or six, the gap gets much smaller. See all our prices by group size →
When a coach tour is the better choice
- You're travelling alone and want the lowest price
- You're a couple on a tight budget
- You enjoy meeting other travellers along the way
- You're happy with a fixed route and timetable
When a private tour is the better choice
- You're travelling with children, especially young ones who need car seats or breaks
- You're a group of four or more, so the price per person comes down
- Someone in your group walks slowly or has mobility needs
- You want pickup from your door, not a meeting point
- You'd like a guide who speaks Arabic — Waseem and Ahmad both do
- You want the day to fit your plans, not the other way round
What a Private Day Looks Like
Your driver-guide collects you from your Edinburgh hotel at 8:00 AM in an air-conditioned minibus that's yours for the day, with bottled water and Scottish biscuits on board.
Along the way you stop where the views are — and stop again if someone needs a break. At the main stop you take as long as you like, and the drive home goes at your pace too, until we drop you back at your door.
